The original occupants of these lands where the Lenni-Lenape Indians. Believed to have been living in the Delaware Valley since the 1400s up until the 1700s, evidence of their settlement, such as tools and other artifacts, have been found in the area. With the coming of the early 17th century came the first European Settlers of this land. Perhaps the most notable of the settlers were the Evans family who came here in 1682.

Carrying the same name as his father, William Evans purchased a couple of hundred acres of land here. The 300 acres he bought would later be called Mount Laurel. Come 1689, an acre of land was gifted to the Society of Friends by William Evans and the Friends Meeting House was built. To this day the Meeting House still stands and is actually still in use.

Because of its interesting beginnings, Mount Laurel has quite a number of historic locations which add to the charisma of the present day community. Named by a Friends Meeting House schoolteacher after the multitude of Laurels that would grow on the mount, Mount Laurel Township was incorporated in 1872 and is still a very lovely community.
